The Science

In this study we aim to investigate what children know about their own knowledge; an ability called metacognition. Metacognition enables us to keep track of what we know and what we don’t. This ability helps us decide when we need to search for extra information when solving a problem and guides the style of search we perform. The data from this study will allow us to shed some light on the age at which this ability develops in humans and how big a role it plays in young children’s problem solving.

What will happen in this study?

On clicking the ‘play now’ link you will first be taken to a short online form so that we can check you meet our requirements, make sure you understand and consent to the data we will be taking from the game, and ask a little more information about your child.

After you have completed the form, the study will load for your child to play. This can sometimes take a few minutes so please be patient!

The study is designed to be game-like and so your child should be able to sit and play the game without any assistance. Please do not help your child. We are interested in how you child approaches the problem rather than what answers they choose and so do not worry if your child doesn’t appear to be collecting many food items.
